Conference 2000 ----------------------- Ceildih Opening Speech by John
Forteith Ladies and Gentlemen On behalf of Dumfries and Galloway Council I would like to welcome all our guests from around the world to join with me in a evening of Scottish entertainment. This has been Dumfries and Galloway day at the conference and I hope that you enjoyed hearing the children of Loreburn Primary School entertain you this morning. Fraser Sanderson, our Director of Education told you about our partnership with parents and in particular with School Boards. This afternoon you saw us link up with Syracuse University in America. The Pan Am crash did indeed bring heartache and sorrow to the world but it also brought new friendships and ties between Lockerbie Academy and Syracuse University. Dumfries and Galloway Council have supported the Scottish School Board Association since its inception in 1991 by providing office accommodation, advice and the support of our Councillors and staff when required. Parents in education are crucial to the advances taking place in education today. Many of the decisions being made by Councils at the moment require the understanding and support of parents to take some difficult decisions forward. I believe we are joined tonight by guests from as far afield as New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, China, Europe, Edinburgh and many more countries around the world. I would like to particularly welcome Coach Crighner and members of the Scottish Claymores American Football Team who have joined us tonight. I hope you will enjoy your evening and if you are staying on in Scotland after the conference you would be made very welcome in Dumfries and Galloway - about 80 miles south of Glasgow. |
