Conference 2000 ----------------------- Congratulatory Letter Honourable Organisers, Ladies and Gentlemen, In this most beautiful season, we would like to express our congratulations on the successful opening of the International Conference 2000--Parents in Education Around the World, the first and one of the most important international meetings in Scotland, UK. Participants from 19 countries will gather together to explore the role of ' Parents as Partners' in school decision, will compare the process of communication and will exchange views on education so that they can show how each country can benefit from the others and share information and thus prosperity of the 21st century. China always lays great emphasis upon education and is implementing the strategy of developing the country by relying on science and education. Educational development is the foundation of scientific and technological progress. Only by vigorously developing education and science and technology can we accelerate the process of our modernisation drive. China is carrying out reforms on education and will train more and more qualified people in order to satisfy the society's need. China is different from other countries in some respects in educational systems and Parents Partnership in Education. This is a driving force for us to exchange with other countries. We need exchange and co-operation , we need to learn strong points in education from other countries so as to improve our education level. For this reason, we participated in the EU- CHINA LAL Programme--Parents Partnership in Education and hosted Mr W Fraser Cook and Mr. Brian Thomson from South Ayrshire, Scotland and Mr. Jacob van Praagh and Mr. Lothar H Bluhm from Celle, Germany. During their stay in Chuzhou City, we, the partners of the linking programme, visited schools, held workshops and exchanged views on parents' role in education. On 15,December,1999, the Goodwill Delegation of Chuzhou City paid a visit to South Ayrshire and received a warm welcome. The delegation saw with their own eyes the advanced aspects of education in South Ayrshire and experienced the gracious hospitality and friendliness extended to us. We intended to attend the International Conference but unfortunately had to cancel it for some special most significant reasons. It is a pity that we missed a good chance to exchange views with friends from other countries. This does not mean that we are not interested in the conference: on the contrary, we are keeping very close eyes on the conference and will watch with great enthusiasm its progressing on the website. It is our hope that we can get a copy of the f@ report and that all participants will have chance to visit Chuzhou sometime in the future so as to conduct exchanges of views on education with us. We place our hope on the current auspicious conference because we believe it will promote mutual understanding and friendly exchanges between various nations, particularly between parents and educational experts, so that countries around the world will share the precious experience of education. For this, we warmly herald the opening of the International Conference 2000--Parents in Education around the World and wish the Conference a complete success. Please accept our best wishes. Chen Feng
