Conference 2000 ----------------------- Paired Learning Many parents are less interested in democratic participation in school decision making than they are in the learning progress of their own children. However, parents who ask how they can help at home are all often given vague generalisations, or mechanistic tasks like "supervising homework". "Paired Learning" is a collective term for a number of carefully structured ways for parents to help their children with learning at home, in co-operation with the school. There are structured methods for reading, thinking skills, writing, spelling, mathematics and science. All have been carefully researched and evaluated and found to be effective. Paired Reading, in particular, is widely recognised as one of the most effective and cost-effective ways of raising childrens reading attainments. This workshop will give an introduction to Paired Learning methods. Keith Topping |
