Election Statement: Dalwhinnie School Board
I have a keen interest in Scottish Education and wish to
build a climate of trust between the parties charged with
the task of promoting a world-class education system for
the benefit of Scottish young people. This can only be
achieved when government, parents, teachers and the young
people themselves have mutual respect and a focused
ambition and sense of purpose.
I see the Scottish School Board Association as a vital
partner in this dynamic and as a national focus of school
board views.
I feel equipped to serve as an Executive Board Member
because of my background and experience:
I have had the benefit of guiding three daughters through
primary and secondary education in Scotland. My eldest
daughter is now a first class Honours graduate of
Cambridge University, my middle daughter is an
undergraduate member of' the Law School at Strathclyde
University and my youngest is still a pupil at Kingussie
High School.
I have a sound academic background: a degree from
Edinburgh University in psychology and philosophy, a post
graduate Master of Education degree from Aberdeen
University and the Diploma in Public Administration
(SCOTVEC).
I have worked as a teacher for 8 years and have been a
headteacher for the last 21 years. I am the principal
adviser to Newtonmore School Board and am presently one
of the co-opted members of Dalwhinnie School Board in the
Highland Council area.
My wife is a primary teacher and shares with me her
experience from her female and first hand perspective of
the early education sector.
I would like to see the Scottish School Board Association
promote the views and concerns of Scottish School Boards
at the highest level of decision making in Scotland. It
must be accountable to the membership and maintain a
position of integrity within the national life of
Scotland.
