Welcome Packs for Parent Council Members
All Headteachers should have received copies of the Welcome Packs for Parent Council Members (SEED 2007). 
These were distributed by the Scottish Executive Schools Division towards the end of August 2007. 
They are also available online at

Ask your Headteacher if you have not received your pack.

Development/Training Packs for Parents
During the summer we have prepared a series of three packs to clarify the roles and responsibilities of Parent Councils.
Details of the packs are as follows:


"Continuous Parental Development – Pack 1 – What parents need to know about Scottish Education"
This pack will help increase your knowledge of the Scottish education system covering, for example, the Curriculum for Excellence, the Five National Priorities, Values, Purposes of the Curriculum from 3 – 18, Assessment is for Learning, Wider Achievement.

"Continuous Parental Development – Pack 2 – Roles and Responsibilities of Parent Councils"
This pack will cover the content of the Scottish Schools (Parental Involvement) Act 2006, what is meant by parental involvement – learning at home, home/school partnership, parental representation, what is the role of the education authority in promoting parental involvement, how can a Parent Council support the work of the school etc.

"Continuous Parental Development – Pack 3 – The Effective Parent Council at Work" - This pack will cover the different types of meetings Parent Councils may have, a time line for Parent Council agendas in relation to Education Authority meetings, key skills for chairing Parent Council meetings, format of a typical agenda, carrying out your role as an individual, etc.

It is intended more Parent Council material will be written in response to Parent Council demand and needs.
