Health and Safety in Schools

The Health and Safety at Work Act governs all our lives and despite much bad press it is an essential part of education provision. The role of the employer is crucial. In most cases this is managed face to face; but with schools this can be an impossible task. Schools can be spread over a wide geographical area and the Local Education Authority may at best have two Safety Advisors with the responsibility of advising and monitoring those schools.

The Health and Safety Executive requires the employer to audit and monitor health and safety practice as well as provide risk assessment, training and in-house support. This can be an impossible task and many schools may never receive a visit; or at best once every 5 years.

European Education Consultants wants to provide a national audit which will help both the school, the Local Authority and the Scottish Government in developing pro-active systems, focused training and targeted funding. Please read their short insert and support them in encouraging your school to participate in this project. They will be contacting each Authority Safety Office in October followed by information to each school. The audit process will take no more than 15 minutes of the schools time and will be of considerable benefit to the school and the Education Authority.
